UNITED’S TOUGH TASK

United will face PSG who have been in scintillating form this season.

As well as topping a group that included Liverpool and Napoli, the French giants are cruising in Ligue 1 and are yet to lose in the league in 16 games.

They also have one of the most feared forward lines in world football.

How will the likes of Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof , Chris Smalling and Phil Jones deal with Kylian Mbappe, Edison Cavani and Neymar.

GOOD OMEN FOR LIVERPOOL?

Liverpool look to have got unlucky by drawing Bayern Munich.

But history might be on their side if we look back at some of their other European encounters.

The pair have faced off in Europe’s top competition only once before, with the Reds coming out on top on away goals in the 1980/81 semi-final. They also won 3-2 in the 2011 UEFA Super Cup.

Former Liverpool star Luis Garcia and PSG player Lara Georges take got the stage and will draw the teams.

Garcia’s ‘ghost goal’ helped Liverpool to the final in 2005, where Steven Gerrard inspired them to come from 3-0 down and beat AC Milan on penalties.

We are now ready to proceed with the draw……

VAR THIS VAR THAT

UEFA deputy general secretary Giorgio Marchetti takes to the stage.

He will be guiding us through the draw and pays tribute to Ajax and Lyon for making the knockout stage after years in the wilderness.

He also reminds us that VAR will be introduced in the knockout stage and says UEFA are excited by the prospect of it coming in.

They telling that to Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian claimed VAR would have deemed that Virgil van Dijk should have been sent off in Liverpool’s win over Napoli to secure the last 16 place.

NOT LONG NOW…

Incredibly, it looks like we might get underway very shortly.

These draws are notorious for dragging on and being delayed.

But, we’re all set here and Pedro Pinto has addressed the crowd before introducing a video of the highlights from the group stage.

Just seen some of top-scorer Robert Lewandowski’s best bits this season. His Bayern Munich side lie in wait for three of the four English teams.

DOESN’T MATA WHO WE GET

The draw is just ten minutes away and Manchester United’s Juan Mata sounds confident despite the prospect of facing one of the competition’s big guns.

“We have to wait and see who we play against,” he said.

“We have to believe that we can beat whoever it is. It is going to be a difficult team because obviously the teams that qualified are very good.”

Virgil van Dijk

VAN DIJK DREAMS OF GLORY

Virgil van Dijk is hoping Liverpool can go one better than last year.

The Reds were beaten by Real Madrid in a thrilling final And the Dutchman is desperate to get his hands on the trophy this time around.

“We want to reach the maximum and hopefully do better than we did last year in the Champions League,” Van Dijk said.

“You need to have dreams, you need to go for it, otherwise why would you be a footballer?”

GOTZE EYES KLOPP REUNION

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp could face former club Borussia Dortmund in the last 16.

And his ex-player Mario Gotze has spoken about the prospect of a reunion.

“That would be a tough test,” the German playmaker said.

“Let’s wait and see what happens. Regardless of which opponent you get in the Champions League last 16, it will be tense and very, very tough.”

JOSE’S TOP FOUR CLAIM

Does United boss Jose Mourinho might need to win the Champions League to stand any chance of getting in to the competition next season?

Well, Mourinho is having none of it despite his side being a whopping 11 points off the top four after Sunday’s defeat by Liverpool.

“Yes, I think (we can),” he said. “What gives me that belief? It gives me the belief that we are going to make much more points in the second part of the season than we did in the first part.”

“I know we lost some other matches but we played away at Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City – probably the three best teams apart from Tottenham.

“But we play with them away. I think we have more possibility to get more points in the second part of the season than the first part.”

HOW THE DRAW WORKS

Just a quick reminder as to how this works – in case you didn’t already know.

No teams from the same country can be drawn against each other and teams who qualified from the same group will be kept apart for this round.

Seeded teams will have the advantage – if it is one – of playing the first leg away from home.

Just looking at the potential opponents for the unseeded English teams and it makes for some scary reading. Porto must be the one team they all want.
